Vladimir Putin, Russia’s three-term president, has to date eschewed brute force to suppress opposition. But this week opposition leaders have been repeatedly interrogated by police, their homes and those of their extended families raided, and a law rushed through parliament designed to intimidate anti-regime protesters who refuse to stay off the streets.
